Therapy for Visual Skills

We start developing visual skills in childhood, fine-tuning our skills as we grow. And, just as other skills are important for life, visual skills are crucial to almost everything we do.

The body is a complex system, with the brain working in tandem with other parts of the body to produce function and movement. If the brain and eyes don’t work together as a team, vision therapy may be needed to help correct this. Think of it as physiotherapy for the eyes.

What Is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is more than just eye exercises. It’s an evidence-based practice that aims to retrain vital visual skills. Most importantly, vision therapy is tailored to each patient. As a result, everyone’s treatment plan will look a little bit different depending on their needs.

At a comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist will evaluate more than just your vision. We’ll assess your depth perception, eye focusing, eye tracking, how well your eyes work together as a team, and more.

Once we determine if vision therapy may be right for you, we’ll develop a treatment plan that includes a combination of in-office procedures led by a doctor and at-home work to help solidify your skills.

Does My Child Need Vision Therapy?

Children’s learning and development rely on their visual skills. So, if they’re struggling in school, it may be a sign that there’s a vision issue at play.

The following issues may indicate that your child needs an appointment with an optometrist to assess for vision problems:

  • Poor reading comprehension
  • Holding books close to the face while reading
  • Short attention span with close-up tasks
  • Losing or misplacing items
  • Clumsiness and knocking things over
  • Skipping or repeating lines while reading

If you notice any problems with your child’s learning, booking an appointment can help to rule out a vision condition.

Do I Need Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is not only for vision development. Sometimes, accidents and injuries can impact our visual system. Vision therapy can be a useful aspect of your rehabilitation to restore your vision and visual skills and reduce uncomfortable symptoms.

In adults, conditions such as binocular vision dysfunction (BVD), chronic headaches or migraines, and post-concussion syndrome or other head injuries can impact our visual comfort and our daily lives. Vision therapy aims to reduce your symptoms and improve your quality of life.

If you’re experiencing uncomfortable vision symptoms like eye fatigue, headaches, vertigo, or light sensitivity, book an appointment with us. We can assess your visual system and determine if vision therapy may be a good option for you.
